Speak the truth Jack! Amen!

Let's not let them waste our fuckin' money...

Tell 'em hell no.

Here's what I wrote.

I oppose the proposed bailout plan because nowhere in the constitution
does it say any business deserves the right to exist. Let the market
forces of capitalism punish those whose business practices fail to earn
them profit. Let them fold and have their assets purchased by companies
who are more nimble and careful with their money.

The resemblance this proposal has to economic planning that would occur in
a communist country can not be ignored. Please re-read the constitution
and remember that the money you wish to spend is not yours. How does this
represent the will of the American people? Doesn't this remind you of why
the colonies rebelled against England?

Sincerely,

John Tooker

Marqui Adora songs...

Here's a few of the songs current status:

1-The Fall is ready for vocals and then for Joe and Danny to do the backing vocal parts.

2-Window to the Shore still needs Joe's HH and cymbals then it's ready for mixing. I'll try to get him something to start practicing to by this weekend so that maybe he and I can finish that off soon.

3-Catch the Sun needs middle vocal part.

4-Gloom needs me and Joe to fine tune which parts play in what sections but is very close to mixing.

5-Walk Away needs some more aggression to it. I have some ideas that I might try. Also I want to try the noisy intro idea.

6-In Motion cymbals, then bass, then guitars, then vocals. I'll get Joe a practicing version this week.

7-Body and Mind-Drums need some work. Then track bass. Add one more guitar idea. Then record vocals.

Some of the others that need a bunch of stuff but are a little more solid include these:

8-Simple Lies
9-Yours and Mine
10-Reveal
11-Everyone Around Me

And there's a few older tunes I've started to tinker with and a pair of newer ideas as well.

More Pro Tools to Logic Pro 8 switcher tips...

Howard sent me a rather good Logic question...

"you know how in ProTools during a playback, the meter for that track stays constant depending on how strong the audio file is and not dependent on where the fader is....and in Logic, that same meter display varies depending on placement of the fader...ya feel me?

anywhoo, i looked in the manual and had no luck...?"

The answer is rather hard to stumble upon so here's how to do what the H-Man wants to do.

To get Logic Pro 8 to show the channel meters pre-fader style you first must right click on the transport bar in some of the dead space to bring up the Customize Transport Bar options as shown below.

You should then turn on the Pre-Fader Metering button listed below the Modes and Functions list.

It will add a button to the right of he transport bar that when switched on changes the meters from post fader to pre-fader.

Dig it:

I'm glad Howard made me think of this because it is one of the things I was use to seeing in Pro Tools and hadn't noticed I was missing it in Logic.

And now I can switch at the touch of a button in the Transport Bar.

Keep 'em coming H-Man!

Mixing In Logic Pro... Episode One.

Some advice for mixing in Logic.

Since I've switched from mostly recording with Pro Tools to using Logic I've found a few things help me make the transition.

1-Logic lets you have a lot of tracks so use 'em. When I find a need to make one section stand out in some way I'll take one of the instruments and use it on a second track to allow for a brief change in the character of the mix. Don't be afraid to have a boatload of tracks in a Logic Session.

2-Don't waste the horsepower of your machine. Be sure to use strip silence or manually remove sections of dead air on all your tracks. The reason to do this is Logic, unlike Pro Tools only uses effects when there is audio on the tracks.

3-Don't waste the horsepower of your machine. Use the freeze track option. It does some weird stuff sometimes but most of the time you'll gain some more power back. Works best if your session is on a fast harddrive.

4-Under the view menu you can add more to the track header including track freeze and colors.

5-Hit the A key!

6-You can assign a second tool that will be used when you hold the command key down. Holding control and option will switch to the zoom tool. Hitting esc will let you quickly change the main tool. Holding command while selecting the tool will choose the second tool. The fade tool is handy for cleaning up tracks before mixing.

7-I usually start my mix by having the kick and snare drum alone at about -10db to -6db then build my mix round that. If I need to lower the overall mix I'll hit the X key and drag across the track names on the mixer so I can pull them all down without using a group.

8-Careful with the EQ. +30db and -30db is a lot of power. Use it very lightly. The EQ has an analyzer that can be pre or post EQ.

9-Some of the channel strip presets and Compressor settings are great but you'll need to adjust the threshold of the compressor to work with your tracks.

10-The compressor has several different models that can have a very strong effect on the sound and feel. (I think these are some of the different Circuit Types-VCA=dbx160, Class A R =Focusrite Red, Class A U Urei, Opto=LA2A ish)

11-When in doubt try a tape delay. I love that fuckin' thing!

12-check the extended paramters on the plug-ins. Hit the disclosure triangle to see them.

13-Remember you can and should go back later and use Soundtrack Pro, Waveburner or another Logic session to master your tracks so you don't have to worry about the overall level while working on your mix.

More later...

Marqui Adora update by Tooker

Hey people,

I thought I'd give you guys a long overdue update on our doings and such.

Last year we spent a few months chasing down TV and Movie peeps with the intention of getting our tunes placed in a few ads, TV shows, or movies. We met with limited financial returns and had to go back to having "day jobs" before the year ended which led to a halt of recording work for the last few months. The good news is that Joe and I both have day jobs that suit us better then the ones we had left a year ago. (Not that the old place was that bad mind you, it was just time to move on to greener pastures.)

While not much has happened in the recordings department we have had an increase in the number of live shows that we played down here in South Florida. In the last few months we've played shows in a few different 2 piece and three piece configurations. (The last show at PS-14 a few weeks back was the first we've played as a full band since before Halloween!) The good that came from these shows is that we feel very comfortable creating unique shows by altering our songs to fit the environment of the show rather than only playing a song one way.

The downside is that we remain rather disheartened by the lack of interest in live music in South Florida. (Things where very different when we all started playing in bands as teenagers down here.) We've decided to focus on playing more selectively in the next few months and will instead invest our time and energy back into finishing some of the long unfinished recordings and developing new songs.

To fill the hole left by not playing shows we've decided to make some some of our rehearsals into recordings and film them for youtube and such. Please remember we ain't no freaking boy bands people so don't expect any dance moves or bling. They will just be captured moments in time, warts and all as they say. I spent today editing the first of these and hope to have it finished and uploaded tomorrow. Be on the look out for a warehouse recording and video of a newish song called Walk Away.

More to come...

-Tooker
